A sharp, well-lit photo where the subject fills the frame will always convert better than a dark, blurry, or heavily filtered one. A square crop is my quiet favourite for a single subject — it centres the face and gives it maximum canvas. 5. Square vs round drills is a finish choice

Square drills tile edge-to-edge for a crisp, fully-covered mosaic look; round drills go on faster and sparkle a touch more. Neither is “better” — it’s genuinely your preference. For custom portraits we always do full-drill — the whole image covered — because that edge-to-edge shimmer is what makes people stop and look. Partial-drill kits (sparkle subject, printed background) are quicker and fine for casual designs, but for a gift meant to hang for years, full drill is worth it. 7. Plan for timing — especially for gifts

A custom piece involves three stages: proof approval, crafting, and delivery. That’s more moving parts than an off-the-shelf design, so give yourself margin.
