What photo works best for a diamond painting?
The best photos for a diamond painting are sharp, evenly lit, and framed so the subject fills most of the picture. One or two subjects convert far better than a busy group shot, and natural light beats harsh flash. High resolution helps, but our proof stage will flag anything that won’t translate well.
The better the photo, the better the art. Here’s what I look for when a customer asks whether their image will work:
- Good, even lighting. Natural light beats harsh flash or deep shadow. A photo taken near a window on an overcast day is often ideal.
- Sharp focus on the subject. Blurry or heavily-filtered photos lose detail when mapped to drills. Skip the beauty filters — they smear the very features that make a face recognisable.
- Fill the frame. One or two subjects work best; tiny faces in a wide shot won’t resolve well. If the moment matters, crop in tight before you upload.
- Higher resolution helps — but don’t stress. Send the best you have, and we’ll be honest on your proof about what the canvas can and can’t hold.
Common mistakes to avoid
A few habits trip people up more than anything else. Don’t send a screenshot of a screenshot — every re-save loses detail. Avoid photos where the subject is backlit into a silhouette; the drills can only show what the camera caught. And be wary of very dark scenes: rich shadows look moody on a screen but turn into large blocks of near-black drills that flatten the piece. When in doubt, choose the brighter, simpler photo over the artistic one — it almost always makes the better canvas.
Choosing the right size
Size is the biggest factor in a great portrait. Faces need room to look like themselves, so for people and pets I recommend 40×50cm or a 40×40 / 50×50 cm square. Group photos or detailed scenes do best at 50×60cm. Square or round drills — which finish?
Both are full-drill on our custom canvases, so the whole image is covered either way.
